DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, Piedras Blancas Light Station opens its gates for a morning that feels closer to a working research field day than a typical lecture series.\nMeet the Scientists brings the public face to face with the marine biologists\, ecologists\, and conservation specialists who study this stretch of the Central Coast year round. \nThe 2026 lineup features the NOAA gray whale survey team\, a speaker from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary\, and a representative from the Central California Marine Animal Response Team sharing the latest research on marine mammal diseases along the Central Coast. The setting alone is worth the trip. Piedras Blancas sits on a rugged\, windswept point about six miles north of Hearst Castle\, surrounded by the California Coastal National Monument and home to elephant seals\, sea otters\, seabirds\, and migrating whales. Lunch is served after the talks. \nThis is a great morning for naturalists\, families with curious kids\, and anyone who has ever stopped at the elephant seal vista and wondered what the scientists down the coast are actually working on. Reservations are required and space tends to fill quickly. SUMMARY:North Coast: California Bumble Bee Atlas Field Event at Piedras Blancas Light Station
DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of citizen science along one of the most scenic stretches of the Central Coast. \nThe California Bumble Bee Atlas Field Event brings together community members\, naturalists\, and conservation partners for a hands-on experience tracking and documenting native bumble bees. Hosted at the historic Piedras Blancas Light Station just north of Cambria\, this event is part of a statewide effort led by the Xerces Society to better understand and protect California’s pollinators. \nParticipants will learn how to safely observe and identify bumble bees in the field\, contribute to real scientific data collection\, and explore the coastal habitat where these important species live and forage. It’s a rare opportunity to take part in meaningful conservation work while spending time outdoors in one of the most beautiful locations on the North Coast. \nNo prior experience is required\, just curiosity and a willingness to explore. \nRegistration is required to participate.
