Hello Spotlight: Robin’s Restaurant

A closer look at the people behind one of Cambria’s favorite local restaurants

Hello Spotlight is a recurring feature highlighting the people behind the local businesses that help make Cambria special. Robin’s Restaurant is the first business featured in the series.

Some restaurants become part of a place.
Others become part of people’s lives.

And every once in a while, a restaurant manages to become both.

Tucked along Burton Drive in Cambria’s historic East Village, surrounded by lush gardens, climbing vines, and beautifully manicured trees, Robin’s has quietly done exactly that.

For more than forty years, the restaurant has welcomed locals, travelers, and returning guests who build traditions around a table here. On any given evening you might find a couple celebrating an anniversary beside a family gathering where three generations are sharing dinner together.

The kitchen sends out dishes inspired by flavors from around the world, often built around ingredients grown nearby along the Central Coast. The dining rooms glow warmly on cool coastal evenings, while the garden hums with conversation under trees and lantern light.

For many people, Robin’s is not simply a restaurant they discovered once.
It is a place they return to again and again.
Spend enough time in Cambria and you start to notice a pattern. For anyone planning a visit, it doesn’t take long to see why Robin’s is often mentioned alongside the town’s most memorable experiences.

Someone always has a Robin’s story.

That has certainly been true for my family.

More than twenty-five years ago, my wife and I discovered Robin’s by accident on the first night of our honeymoon road trip up the California coast. We ended up sitting in the small stained glass nook tucked behind red curtains, a quiet table that felt almost like our own little room.

It was one of those lucky travel moments that stays with you.
Since then, Robin’s has remained one of our favorite restaurants anywhere.

It is where we have celebrated anniversaries, gathered with family, and introduced our children to a place that quickly became one of their favorites as well.

In fact, we recently celebrated our twenty-fifth anniversary there, sitting in the same relaxed atmosphere that first made us fall in love with the place.

One of the small joys of dining at Robin’s is that it somehow welcomes everyone at the table. In our family alone we have two vegetarians, a vegan, and one unapologetic meat eater, and somehow every visit ends with everyone feeling like the menu was built just for them.

If you ever scroll through a slideshow any time in your life, this is the one.

My own personal weakness arrives at the end of the meal: the vegan ice cream sundae. Even someone who loves traditional ice cream cannot help but appreciate just how good it is.

Arriving at Robin’s

A visit to Robin’s begins before you ever sit down at the table.

Guests arrive along Burton Drive and step onto a welcoming front patio where the host greets them and checks reservations. It is a relaxed little arrival space, often filled with guests chatting while they wait for their table, the scent of dinner drifting from the doorway nearby.

From there, the evening begins to unfold.

Depending on where you are seated, the host may lead you along a path that wraps around the front of the building and opens into Robin’s garden. Tables sit beneath towering trees and lush greenery, the space alive with conversation and soft light filtering through branches overhead.

Or you might be guided through the front doorway into the heart of the restaurant itself, where two very different dining spaces await.

Just inside sits the covered patio, a favorite spot for many regulars. Wooden beams stretch above the tables while climbing vines wrap the structure in green. The space feels open to the garden while still offering a cozy sense of shelter from the cool coastal air.

Continue a little farther and the restaurant reveals its most intimate spaces inside the historic building.

Here the dining rooms feel less like a restaurant and more like a welcoming Cambria home. Exposed wooden beams cross the ceilings, colorful artwork lines the walls, and small rooms create quiet corners for conversation.

One room glows warmly around a fireplace on cool evenings.

Another holds one of the most beloved tables in the restaurant.

Tucked behind red curtains sits a small alcove framed by a stained glass window. Inside is a single wooden table for two, softly lit and slightly hidden from the rest of the dining room.

It is a table where anniversaries are celebrated, where proposals have happened, and where many guests remember exactly where they were sitting years later.
For some people, that table becomes part of their Robin’s story.

For visitors exploring Cambria’s East Village, Robin’s Restaurant has long been considered one of the town’s signature dining experiences. Travelers searching for the best restaurants in Cambria often hear the same recommendation from locals: make a reservation at Robin’s, arrive hungry, and plan to stay awhile.

Of course, the warmth and ease guests experience when they sit down for dinner here are the result of decades of dedication behind the scenes.

At the center of it all is Shanny Covey, owner and general manager of Robin’s Restaurant.

The Story Behind the Restaurant

Long before Robin’s became one of Cambria’s most beloved restaurants, it began in a much smaller space with a much simpler idea.

In 1979, Robin and Shanny Covey took over a tiny health food shop on Cambria’s Main Street called Honeysuckle. They renamed it Robin’s Nest, selling organic groceries and health foods to a growing community interested in fresh ingredients and thoughtful cooking.

Before long, the shop expanded into Robin’s Garden Café, where the couple began serving simple dishes made from the same fresh ingredients they were selling.

That early commitment to fresh, local ingredients still carries through today. Much of the produce used at Robin’s is sourced from the local farmers market, a connection that keeps the menu closely tied to the seasons and the surrounding Central Coast landscape.

Several years later, the restaurant moved to its current Burton Drive location.
From the beginning, community support played a major role in the restaurant’s success.

As Shanny remembers:

“I recall how much work it took to get off the ground. We were fortunate that we opened to a full house and never really had to work that hard for folks to know about us. I think that’s the beauty of living in a small town. You make it or break it based on the reputation you build.”

The early days were also a balancing act between entrepreneurship and family life.

“This was our first business and we were young parents with a toddler to chase around. We enjoyed the health food store. It was laid back in a sense, and we were able to build a reputation for our food and dedication to quality fresh produce with the locals. That was the reason we opened Robin’s Restaurant to a full house. It wasn’t as stressful as running a restaurant.”

Becoming Part of Cambria

For many businesses, becoming part of a small town takes time.
For Robin’s, that sense of belonging arrived immediately.

“It felt like we were part of the community from day one. We had such great support from friends and other locals. Robin’s has always felt like we belong to the community, and I take that very seriously.”

Today the restaurant’s menu reflects the international influences that shaped it from the beginning.

“I am originally from Singapore and Robin was from the Central Valley. Robin loved cooking food from different countries and grew fond of Southeast Asian foods from my influence. We’ve always loved introducing our guests to different global flavors.”

Restaurants can serve great food for years.
But the ones that last for generations usually offer something else entirely.

The Experience Behind the Meal

Ask Shanny what she hopes guests feel when they walk through the door and her answer is simple.

“I am always grateful for every guest who walks through my door and I never want to take their loyalty for granted. It has to be earned. I want every guest to feel warmly taken care of and feel that we’ve mindfully given them the best experience we can, from the food to the service to the ambiance.”

Creating that experience requires far more effort behind the scenes than many diners might imagine.

“People do not realize the details it takes to create the experience they come for. It may look easy and romantic, but it’s far from it. Every day requires mindful effort to stay calm and do what it takes to achieve our purpose and mission.”

That experience extends beyond the plate as well. Robin’s thoughtfully features locally sourced wines from across the Central Coast, giving guests the opportunity to pair their meals with vintages that reflect the same regional character found in the kitchen.

Signature Dishes and Longtime Favorites

Some dishes come and go over the years.
Others become permanent fixtures.

For Shanny, one dish stands above the rest.

“The dish that has the most meaning to me is the Chow because we’ve had it on the menu for 40 years and it stays consistently fresh and delicious. Its creation was also influenced by my Asian roots.”

Another longtime favorite is the salmon bisque created by Robin himself.

“It’s a recipe Robin created and folks loved it from the start. It’s been on our menu for at least 25 years. Truth be told, I don’t care for it myself because I don’t eat dairy and it’s too rich for me.”

Generations Around the Table

Few things illustrate a restaurant’s impact on a community better than the families who return year after year.

“This is one of the most rewarding things about having had Robin’s for 40 years. I’ve served three generations of families and love that I’ve watched young babies grow into adults and return with their families and friends. It’s amazing and makes me feel so blessed.”

Strength Through the Years

Running a restaurant for four decades requires resilience.

For Shanny, that strength comes from deeply personal sources.

“It does require resilience and perseverance almost every day. My mother instilled these qualities in me and they’ve served me well. The real reason I’ve been able to get through the challenges is my faith in God. I know He will give me whatever strength and resources I need to make it through anything, and He’s never failed me. Knowing that I have so many people counting on me, from guests to family to staff, keeps me strong too.”

A Few Favorite Cambria Moments

Even restaurant owners take time to appreciate the place they call home.

“I love taking a drive to the beach, breathing in the fresh sea air, and watching the waves. It’s very calming. I also enjoy spending time in my garden whenever I can.”

Cambria’s International Film Festival is another favorite.

“The Cambria International Film Festival is such a wonderful event for our small town. It gives us access to view incredible international films and even meet some of the creators. We’re lucky to have it in our little town.”

When asked what makes Cambria smile, Shanny’s answer reflects a deep appreciation for the place she calls home.

“That I live in this beautiful area with mild winters near the ocean and share it with so many wonderful townsfolk. I know I’m blessed.”

Of course, every memorable meal eventually reaches the same moment.

And Then There Is Dessert

No visit to Robin’s feels complete without saving a little room at the end of the meal.

The dessert menu has developed a following of its own over the years, and many locals will tell you it is worth the visit all on its own. Guests finishing dinner often linger over coffee and something sweet before slowly making their way back out into the Cambria evening.

And for those who simply cannot resist one of the restaurant’s desserts, Robin’s even offers a separate entrance for guests picking up to go orders.

It is not unusual to see someone slipping in just for dessert.

After all, when something is that good, it deserves its own doorway.

Closing Reflection

After more than four decades, Robin’s has become woven into the story of Cambria.

Some guests arrive while exploring the Central Coast for the first time. Others return year after year, bringing friends, children, and eventually grandchildren who are discovering Robin’s for the first time themselves.

Restaurants rarely last this long without becoming something more than a business.

They become places where memories accumulate.

For many people who have spent time in Cambria, Robin’s is exactly that kind of place.

And somewhere tonight, beneath the garden trees or inside the warm glow of the dining room, someone is sitting down for dinner and beginning their own Robin’s story.
