DESCRIPTION:Kids can earn a California State Park Junior Ranger badge right at the edge of one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles on the Central Coast.\nEvery Tuesday through the summer\, State Park interpreters set up at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery in Hearst San Simeon State Park with a hands-on craft or activity\, and families are welcome to drop in anytime between 10:30 and 11:30 AM. \nThe program runs at the State Park table at the southern end of the Elephant Seal Rookery parking lot. It’s free\, parking is free\, and it’s geared for ages 7 to 12\, though the rookery itself is a draw for all ages. While you’re there\, the boardwalk overlooks hundreds of elephant seals hauled out on the beach\, so it’s easy to pair the Junior Ranger activity with some of the best wildlife viewing the coast has to offer. All children must be accompanied by an adult. \nThis is a wonderful\, low-key way to spend a Tuesday morning up the North Coast with the family. SUMMARY:Cambria Scarecrow Festival
DESCRIPTION:Every October\, Cambria gives itself permission to get a little more playful.\nFor the full month\, more than 200 handmade scarecrows appear along Main Street\, beside storefronts and gardens\, down Moonstone Drive\, and out into San Simeon\, turning the whole town into a free\, self-guided walking tour of creativity and community spirit. Some are laugh-out-loud funny\, some are genuinely artful\, and a few have become local celebrities that visitors search out by name and greet like old friends year after year. \nWhat started in 2009 with just 30 scarecrows arranged around the Cambria Historical Society grounds\, inspired by a tiny scarecrow festival in Mahone Bay\, Nova Scotia\, has grown into one of the Central Coast’s most beloved fall traditions. It draws visitors from across California\, and yet it has never lost its handmade\, hometown feel. Businesses build their own characters\, residents volunteer their time\, and artists spend months crafting elaborate displays entirely by hand. The festival is free to enjoy\, though donations and the Friends of the Cambria Scarecrow Festival sponsorship program help keep it going. \nIt is best experienced on foot\, wandering the East and West Villages with a coffee in hand\, ducking down side streets to find what is tucked around the next corner.
