SUMMARY:North Coast: Elephant Seal Rookery Junior Ranger Program
DESCRIPTION:Kids can earn a California State Park Junior Ranger badge right at the edge of one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles on the Central Coast.\nEvery Tuesday through the summer\, State Park interpreters set up at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery in Hearst San Simeon State Park with a hands-on craft or activity\, and families are welcome to drop in anytime between 10:30 and 11:30 AM. \nThe program runs at the State Park table at the southern end of the Elephant Seal Rookery parking lot. It’s free\, parking is free\, and it’s geared for ages 7 to 12\, though the rookery itself is a draw for all ages. While you’re there\, the boardwalk overlooks hundreds of elephant seals hauled out on the beach\, so it’s easy to pair the Junior Ranger activity with some of the best wildlife viewing the coast has to offer. All children must be accompanied by an adult. \nThis is a wonderful\, low-key way to spend a Tuesday morning up the North Coast with the family. No registration needed\, just show up. \nHeading up the coast this summer? SUMMARY:North Coast: Piedras Blancas Hike-In Open House
DESCRIPTION:Hike in to the Piedras Blancas Light Station for an open house on the bluffs\, where an easy coastal trail leads to one of the most striking spots on the North Coast.\nPack a picnic and spend the late morning wandering the lighthouse grounds between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Docents and staff are on hand to answer questions about the light station’s history and the local ecology\, and the gift shop is open. It is a relaxed\, self-paced way to take in the beauty of this Outstanding Natural Area. \nThis is a hike-in event\, so do not drive directly to the light station. Start your hike at the elephant seal viewing area parking lot 1.5 miles south of the light station\, or the vista point parking lot 1 mile to the north. Including the half-mile trail around the grounds\, the round-trip hike is 3 miles from the north and 4 miles from the south. Directions and a map are at piedrasblancas.org. \nEntry is free\, with a suggested donation of $5 per person to support restoration and maintenance. Please note: no pets\, no smoking\, no bicycles\, no drones\, and stay on the trail. \nHeading up the coast this summer? See what else is happening on the HelloCambria events calendar.
