SUMMARY:Docent Walk: Lives in Darkness and Lives in Light — Forest Walk
DESCRIPTION:Discover the fascinating ecosystems of the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve on this docent-led forest walk exploring life in darkness and life in sunlight. \nAs participants stroll beneath the Monterey pine canopy and through open forest clearings\, the walk highlights the unique plants and wildlife that thrive in very different environmental conditions. Some species depend on shaded\, moist forest floors\, while others flourish in bright patches of sunlight. \nThis educational walk explores how these contrasting habitats support diverse life forms and how the balance between shade and light shapes the preserve’s ecosystem. \nAlong the way\, participants may spot native plants\, birds\, and small wildlife while learning about the delicate relationships that make the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve such an important natural resource for the Cambria community. \nWear comfortable shoes suitable for natural trails and bring water for the walk. \nRegister for exact starting location.

SUMMARY:North Coast: California Bumble Bee Atlas Field Event at Piedras Blancas Light Station
DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of citizen science along one of the most scenic stretches of the Central Coast. \nThe California Bumble Bee Atlas Field Event brings together community members\, naturalists\, and conservation partners for a hands-on experience tracking and documenting native bumble bees. Hosted at the historic Piedras Blancas Light Station just north of Cambria\, this event is part of a statewide effort led by the Xerces Society to better understand and protect California’s pollinators. \nParticipants will learn how to safely observe and identify bumble bees in the field\, contribute to real scientific data collection\, and explore the coastal habitat where these important species live and forage. It’s a rare opportunity to take part in meaningful conservation work while spending time outdoors in one of the most beautiful locations on the North Coast. \nNo prior experience is required\, just curiosity and a willingness to explore. \nRegistration is required to participate. Check-in will take place at the Highway 1 entrance gate\, and additional details will be provided to registered participants ahead of the event. \nFor more local events and experiences\, explore the full HelloCambria events calendar or browse our guide to things to do in Cambria.

SUMMARY:Invasive Plants of Fiscalini Ranch Preserve Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join a unique guided walk at the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve to explore the hidden work that helps protect one of Cambria’s most treasured natural spaces.\nThis special docent-led walk replaces the originally scheduled May 16 outing and offers a behind-the-scenes look at how volunteers help manage invasive plant species across the Ranch. Led by docent Michael Thomas\, participants will spend approximately two hours\, mostly off trail\, learning about the invasive plants found on the preserve\, where they come from\, how they are removed\, and how restoration efforts are prioritized week to week. \nWhile the Ranch is known for its beautiful native landscapes and spring wildflowers\, it takes more than 1\,000 volunteer hours each year to maintain these conditions. This walk offers a deeper understanding of that effort while giving participants a more hands-on connection to the land. \nWear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for off-trail walking. Children are welcome with adult supervision. Please note that dogs are not permitted\, there are no restroom facilities on site\, and rain will cancel the event. \nFor registration and additional details\, visit the official event page. \nExplore more local outdoor experiences on the HelloCambria events calendar\, or discover more ways to enjoy the area in our Cambria guide.

SUMMARY:North Coast: Meet the Scientists at Piedras Blancas Light Station
DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, Piedras Blancas Light Station opens its gates for a morning that feels closer to a working research field day than a typical lecture series.\nMeet the Scientists brings the public face to face with the marine biologists\, ecologists\, and conservation specialists who study this stretch of the Central Coast year round. \nThe 2026 lineup features the NOAA gray whale survey team\, a speaker from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary\, and a representative from the Central California Marine Animal Response Team sharing the latest research on marine mammal diseases along the Central Coast. The setting alone is worth the trip. Piedras Blancas sits on a rugged\, windswept point about six miles north of Hearst Castle\, surrounded by the California Coastal National Monument and home to elephant seals\, sea otters\, seabirds\, and migrating whales. Lunch is served after the talks. \nThis is a great morning for naturalists\, families with curious kids\, and anyone who has ever stopped at the elephant seal vista and wondered what the scientists down the coast are actually working on. Reservations are required and space tends to fill quickly. To register\, visit piedrasblancas.org/events or follow the registration link from the Piedras Blancas Light Station Instagram post. \nIf you are planning a coastal day\, there is plenty more along the North Coast worth your time. The full HelloCambria event calendar is the easy way to see what else is happening.
