SUMMARY:Pollinator Palooza: Bee\, Butterfly and Bat Street Faire
DESCRIPTION:Beautify Cambria’s annual Bee\, Butterfly and Bat Faire has grown up.\nIn its 10th year it is now Pollinator Palooza\, a lively street faire in the heart of East Village celebrating the bees\, butterflies\, moths\, bats\, and beetles that keep our gardens and food systems alive. It is a full day of pollinator-friendly fun for families\, gardeners\, and the curious\, with presentations by local experts\, an observation beehive\, Stellaluna the pallid bat\, a stunning close-up photo gallery\, plant sales\, and hands-on activities for kids including the wildly popular scavenger hunt\, face painting\, and a pollen-gathering race. \nThere is plenty to eat and drink\, from local honeys\, lavender\, olive oil\, and mead to Jason’s famous pulled pork\, tamales\, and chocolate-dipped strawberries\, plus pollinator-themed art\, books\, and jewelry from local makers. Live music comes from Curti Creek\, dancers fill the street throughout the day\, and the Dark Skies program will have specially filtered telescopes set up for a safe\, remarkable look at the sun. Admission is free or by donation\, with all proceeds going toward Beautify Cambria’s project to turn the building backs along Highway 1 into painted murals. \nThe fun continues after dark with a one-hour expert-guided bat walk at 8:00 PM on nearby Rodeo Grounds Road. Space is limited\, so sign up early. Wear closed-toe shoes\, bring a flashlight or headlamp\, and power phones down or switch them to airplane mode. \nThe faire lands on the same late June weekend as the Greenspace Adventure Auction\, a big stretch for anyone who loves Cambria’s wild side. Live music plays throughout the day\, too\, so check our live music guide and the full HelloCambria events calendar to round out the weekend.

SUMMARY:Cambria Scarecrow Festival
DESCRIPTION:Every October\, Cambria gives itself permission to get a little more playful.\nFor the full month\, more than 200 handmade scarecrows appear along Main Street\, beside storefronts and gardens\, down Moonstone Drive\, and out into San Simeon\, turning the whole town into a free\, self-guided walking tour of creativity and community spirit. Some are laugh-out-loud funny\, some are genuinely artful\, and a few have become local celebrities that visitors search out by name and greet like old friends year after year. \nWhat started in 2009 with just 30 scarecrows arranged around the Cambria Historical Society grounds\, inspired by a tiny scarecrow festival in Mahone Bay\, Nova Scotia\, has grown into one of the Central Coast’s most beloved fall traditions. It draws visitors from across California\, and yet it has never lost its handmade\, hometown feel. Businesses build their own characters\, residents volunteer their time\, and artists spend months crafting elaborate displays entirely by hand. The festival is free to enjoy\, though donations and the Friends of the Cambria Scarecrow Festival sponsorship program help keep it going. \nIt is best experienced on foot\, wandering the East and West Villages with a coffee in hand\, ducking down side streets to find what is tucked around the next corner. October is the busiest month on the Central Coast calendar\, so if you are visiting for the scarecrows\, book lodging early. \nWe told the full story behind the festival\, from that first trip to Nova Scotia to the volunteers who build it each year\, in our Hello Spotlight feature on the Cambria Scarecrow Festival. For everything else happening around town this fall\, browse the HelloCambria events calendar.
